Wavy Motions

Students worked with a spring toy to see the differences between the two types of mechanical waves - longitudinal (when the medium moves parallel to the direction of the wave) and transverse (when the medium moves perpendicular to the direction of the wave).  Students also experimented with wave frequency - moving the slinky quickly right to left increased the frequency of the transverse wave.  Soon, students will be able to relate this experience to seismic waves and sound waves which we will study in more detail next week.  Eventually, students will be able to contrast these characteristics to electromagnetic waves.
